Health System No. 6: Free Radicals Pathology:

This has to do with Free Radicals pressure. Free Radicals have the nasty feature of damaging the inside of our blood vessels. The enzymes SOD, Katalase and Glutathione Peroxidase are closely involved. This can lead to complaints such as increased cholesterol levels, arteriosclerosis (arteriosclerosis), leg pain, open leg, high blood pressure, heart attack, brain attack, pulmonary embolism and thrombosis. Lately, the Free Radicals Pathology (disease theory) has been in the spotlight more and more often. Most people have not heard much about this yet. Antioxidants are better known. We all know that we should eat 250 grams of vegetables and 2 portions of fruit (200 grams) per day.

However 80% know it but only 20% of the people eat it (Ref. advertising on the radio of the Nutrition Centre). This means that more than 13 million Dutch people do NOT eat it. And it is precisely in fruit and vegetables that these important antioxidants are found. Antioxidants activate a number of enzymes in our body that make Free Radicals less harmful and break them down step by step.

Free Radicals are released in our body during the combustion of glucose and oxygen in our cells. Free Radicals damage the contents of our cells. Antioxidants break down Free Radicals. Within this protection system, 3 enzymes are very active and antioxidants make Free Radicals less harmful and degrade them step by step. Antioxidants protect our cells from smoking, alcohol, air pollution, excessive sunbathing, various medications and heavy sports.

Antioxidants and sport

In sports, tissues are loaded, resulting in more free radicals than in non-sports. During strength training, muscle tissue is even deliberately destroyed to promote muscle growth.

Because all these free radicals are formed, the body must first disarm them, so that the recovery takes longer. A supplementation with antioxidants is certainly recommended for athletes, because the recovery time is considerably shortened. The use of a good antioxidant complex is important to protect your cells from damage and especially to protect your health.

Within this protection system there are three main enzymes active that are activated by Antioxidants. These enzymes are;

S.O.D. (Super Oxide Dysmutase), is activated and built up by: Copper, Zinc, Manganese, Vitamin C, Beta-Carotene/Pro Vitamin A and Vitamin E.

  (S.O.D. is mainly active in the blood and tissues)

G.P. (Glutathione Peroxidase), is activated and built up by: Selenium and Vitamin B2.

  (G.P. is mainly active in the liver)

Cat. (Catalase), is activated and built up by: Vitamin C, Folic acid, Vitamin B12, Copper and Iron.

  (Catalase is mainly active in the lungs)
